This program of Afro-Caribbean and Latinx short films center water, movement, memory and spirituality, inhabiting the space between surrealism and afro-futurism. From following a trans Colombian girl on her way to school, to being hypnotized by a siren’s gaze, to a group a children dreaming of a new world, these recent films take us on a watery journey through the Caribbean, reflecting on the region’s past, present and future through embodied lived experiences. The film offers a thought-provoking narrative on transformation intertwined with black and African spirituality, reframing the story of the Siren and the Sailor. 🌀 Nos Îles Aliha Thalien, 2023, France/ Martinique, 23min In Martinique, a curse upon men leads to their disappearance. A group of young friends meet and talk about their relationship to the island. 🌀 Kanekalon ** US premiere Sara J Aspirilla, 2025, Colombia, 6min Teyo, a trans girl, gets ready to start at her new all-girls school. As she journeys through Quibdó, a warm and vibrant city, she navigates the rhythms and gazes that greet her before stepping into class. 🌀 Solo la luna Comprenderà (The Moon will Contain Us) Kim Torres, 2023, Costa Rica, 19min In the small coastal town of Manzanillo, Costa Rica, local teens and adolescents share their stories, lies, and fantasies on the cusp of a cataclysmic event. Playing amid ruins and wreckages, and voicing their boredom at the lack of change, Manzanillo’s children engage in a collective fabulation, finding strategies for building a new world from the old. 🌀 Danzan Las Luciérnagas (Dancing Fireflies)** US premiere Eleggua Luna Laverde, 2025, Colombia, 19min Keke, a trans knowledge keeper from Cali 4021, faces a heartbreaking decision after being accepted as a biologist for the second wave of exomigration to Mars. Torn between space and love, she questions whether she has the courage to leave Earth and, with it, Ori, Yan, and Sher, the three loves of her life.
