Join historian Jonathan Ned Katz to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking 1976 book Gay American History: Lesbians and Gay! Spanning four centuries and including topics such as “Resistance" and "Love," this groundbreaking 1976 publication pioneered the academic study of LGBTQ+ people in the United States and illuminated important documentation about queer American history. Hosted by Hugh Ryan, lead historian at the American LGBTQ+ Museum, the evening will feature readings from Gay American History (Bert Hansen, Beau Lancaster, Daniela Valdes, Tavia Nyong’o, Leah Tigers, Reginald Harris), an excerpt from filmmaker Philip Harrison’s documentary-in-progress, “Do You Know Jonathan Ned Katz?,” and a conversation between Katz, John D’Emilio, Jen Manion, and Channing Joseph. This program is presented in partnership with The New York Historical and OutHistory.
