About

In this reading series, we’ll learn and think through political topics critically and collectively in the tradition of queer leather groups. Facism and totalitarianism are ever increasing. In this reading series, we’ll learn and think through political topics critically and collectively in the tradition of queer radical leather groups. Please wear a mask. This space is a proposal to ask the following questions together: What values, ethics, and politics are informed by and crucial to leather? How do these things inform our day to day actions and habits? How do we hold ourselves and each other accountable to the ideals of leather as a political identity and position in the face of facism? Do we want to do that? We will use texts and materials to discuss and learn together. In a time of ever-increasing and ever-present totalitarianism, the political and ethical lessons that leather can teach us are crucial, and we need each other to tease them out, massage them, internalize them, and work through them. The ideal of this space is that it will be co-created by who shows up. The space is an offering and a proposal, it is not pre-set or dictated. There is no pre-reading necessary. You just show up! We will have source sheets prepared and we will read together before discussing. Yael Horowitz is an educator, facilitator, researcher, and leatherdyke. She is getting her PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center, and researches Yiddish theatre, friendship, the interplay between aesthetics and politics, and revolution. Hive Mind Books is a queer and trans bookstore and coffee shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. We are located off of the Dekalb Ave (L), Myrtle-Wyckoff (L/M), and Knickerbocker (M) subway stations. Our coffee and tea bar will be open for the duration of this event.
