Craft zines, write poems, reclaim the page! A biweekly workshop series with a queer focus in the Mesa-Tempe-Phoenix area. The extended run! Flipping the Page is a biweekly workshop series made for queer people and allies. Each workshop alternates between teaching a new zine form or poetry form, with a focus on queer self-expression, history, and community. Entry is free, and materials are provided. Limited to 10-12 participants. See below for a schedule of events! For participants, look out for the opportinuty in November to help put your zines into a collection! 9/26: One-Page Zines. Learn to make two different forms of zines from a single sheet of paper, along with a brief history of zining as it relates to queer history. Participants will have the chance to customize and construct their own zines in a workshop-style setting. 10/10: Collage, Blackout, and Erasure Poems. Read and workshop poems that flip the usual scripts on queerness. Cut, splice, black out, and erase words to bring out poems in your own voice! 10/24: Bound Multi-Page Zines. Learn to make larger zines of multiple pages using simple, accessible binding techiques. 11/7: Homolingual Translation Poems. Taking from the very queer technique of homolingual translation, read, write, and workshop poems that actively rewrite the narrative. 11/21: The Zine Zine. Come help us put your work from this class into a zine of other zines! Limited to past participants. Details TBA soon. Notes: This event encourages a welcoming and respectful environment. Therefore, racism, sexism, queerphobia, transphobia, and other forms of bigotry will not be tolerated. Though materials are provided, partipants are welcome to bring their own materials.
