Robert Hood / Ne/Re/A / Marco Neves / Sandrien / Lyric Hood / James Axon
April begins with a session from the master. Robert Hood is one of techno’s core architects, an artist whose work is indelibly braided into the genre’s DNA. Having emerged in Detroit as an early member of Underground Resistance, his initial productions stand as some of the label’s grittiest. Hood’s mixture of unvarnished textures - inspired by both the blight and soul of Detroit - with his deeply-felt spirituality brought him to a new iteration of techno: minimal. Along with Jeff Mills, Hood would innovate and pioneer an approach that would influence countless artists and change the world. His mid-90s work pares back every element to its most unforgivingly barebones, essential qualities. From there, Hood leads the listener into a new universe, at times vexing but always fascinating. In the three decades since then, the power of his work has never diminished. Hood is as vital and masterful as he ever was. Ne/Re/A returns to the room to do what she does best. The Merge resident is one of NY’s definitive techno selectors. A rave sorceress with a keen knack for thundering, peak time energy, Ne/Re/A has been a consistent presence in BASEMENT since we first opened our doors. Base Seven head Marco Neves completes the lineup. Last year’s “Viva” EP sees the producer in a soulful mood, taking raw techno power into a sensual, expressive zone that is utterly hypnotic.
